It has been hard for me to stay motivated about blogging. It's not that I don't have things to say...it's just that I get so busy, and once you let a few things slide without a blog it just begins an avalanche! Plus, my poor camera is MIA...I keep thinking it will just pop up, but to no avail. For some reason I have a hard time thinking people care about what I have to say so much as they just want to see the pictures! Anyway, not gonna pressure myself to catch everyone up on the last few months, and just focus on what's on my mind toady...which is...how freaking awesome the library is!

Okay, seriously, people...how much do you really take advantage of your local library. Okay, I get not everyone shares my complete and utter LOVE of reading, but surely there is something you like to read and the library is sure to have it (even if that something is just latest issue of your fav magazine)! I have found that the Central Arkansas Library System has an online members login where you can peruse the catalog and request your selections from home. Granted I have to do a little research before hand to figure out the specifics of what books I would like to request. I usually peruse sites like goodreads, amazon, and the New York Times book review section to find books that look interesting. Anyway, so you just find them in the catalog and no matter which branch they are at all you have to do is press request and your local library as your pick-up location and ta-da a couple days later they will have it waiting behind the counter for you to pick up! It's awesome!

As most everyone knows, Liv is a tiny little version of me, and the poor thing has inherited most all of my dorky qualities. She is definitely the only person I know who's enthusiasm for reading might be on par with my own (except for my mom...hmmm, interesting). I think she gets more hyped about a trip to the library than a trip to toys 'r us...and why wouldn't she. She gets to pick out like 4 new books and a couple of dvds everytime. When I first realized you could get kids dvds at the library I felt like I had hit the jackpot. Now most every Mom knows what it feels like to take your preschooler to the movie rental place and all they really want is the crappy dvd with three episodes of Dora the Explorer on it. I always just felt so irritated to pay at least $3 a pop for dvds of something I don't even like to watch on the cable tv I already pay for! Anyway, now, when she holds up the box containing all the Spongebob Christmas episodes I can smile, say "sure!", and mean it. Oh, and the dvd selection is not just limited to children. There are some really good grown-up dvds too. I tend to gravitate towards renting their fitness dvds and old television episodes (stuff like sex and the city, sopranos, etc).

Anyway, I know I am starting to sound like an advertisement and a PSA all in one, but I really do love the library. I just feel like we get so much entertainment for free. So, anyway, check it out!

He does what???

Liv's teacher, Mrs. Runder, saw Hyland on his way to class up at UAMS the other day. When I say "big girl" school I mean, it's public school, they wear uniforms, and take attendance. There is no Tuesday Thursday option, or even a half day option. I am not allowed to keep my baby home on Friday just cause I miss her and want to spend the day goofing off together. In fact all this "big girl" school business is making me realize that my baby is no longer a baby! She is in fact a big girl. It's not just a line anymore..."Okay, let's act like a big girl today". She really truly is a big girl, and it is absolutely breaking my heart.

So, yes, I am having a very unexpected break down with this whole first day of school thing. Liv, however, is acting totally cool, and very much like the big girl she is! When I dropped her off this morning she was very excited to play with the other kids. No crying, no whining, no asking me to stay, not even an extra long hug. And I must say she is absolutely the cutest in her little uniform with her red mary janes! She says her favorite part of school is her teacher Ms. Runder and her new friends she has made. Her "school family" is called the Runder Rockets and they do cute things like give each other "firecracker high fives" and have cute little songs to sing with every type of activity.

Anyway, I am so proud of her, but somehow this whole school thing feels like the end of a really special part of her childhood that I am really going to miss. Yes, I know that this is all going to be a lot of fun too, but it still stings. Okay, I am going to stop my boo hooing now and take a trick from Liv and be a "big girl" about all of this!

One Big Post!

Okay, so yes, I have been a terrible blogger! It is my new resolution to get better at this! The things is, life has just been so full and busy, I find it hard to find time to sit down at the computer. Anyway, updates... here are all the things I could have blogged about in the last few months and plan on trying to get in to post some of the pics from each really soon.

First up, summer vacation. This year Hy, Liv, and I all headed down to Florida with Hyland's family. It was absolutely beautiful, fun, relaxing, and all that good stuff. It was Liv's first time to the beach and by the end of the week she was really loving playing in the ocean.

Second, Liv's 4th birthday. I think Liv's birthday this year was one of the most successful birthday parties we have had. We love going to Travelers games (minor leauge baseball team here in LR) as a family. So earlier in the summer Liv decided she wanted to have her birthday at a game. It was very low key and small but we had a great time. Liv got to get on the field and race the bases with Shelley (the team mascot). Shortly before they took the field Liv looked up at this giant moose mascot and said very sweetly, "You're going down". It was too funny.

Third, WE BOUGHT A HOUSE! This is the number one main reason I have been so busy! Between working to pay for a house, house hunting, running around getting everything the bank needed to let us buy a house, and actually fixing up the house, moving, and getting settled things have been crazy. Did I mention we LOVE our house?

Okay, so there is a mini-recap of the last few months. Like I said earlier I plan on posting pics of all said events...just as soon as our little office area gets fully set up. In the mean time if you want to know what is up with us feel free to stop buy for a cold beverage on our fabulous deck if you happen to live locally. If you are an out-of-towner...well, we have a spare bedroom now so please come for a visit! Just make sure to bring your painting clothes ;-)

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

This is a thank you post to everyone who made my birthday so wonderful! Granted I had to work the night before and the night of so I spent aproximately 13 hours of the actual day working and 6 hours of it sleeping, but somehow it still turned out to be great. The kids at work colored me pictures, painted my nails, and made me a bunny necklace. It was so sweet! My mom sent me a beautiful boquet of my favorite flowers (irises). My good buddy Tasha brought me an ice cream cake to work (YUM!). My hubby and Liv bought me a new awesome pair of jeans, and my girls went in together and bought me a new wok so that I can cook all kinds of fancy asian dishes. All the rents sent monies which was promptly turned into new clothes! All in all being 28 isn't that bad. I have an awesome family, great friends, and a job where I get to play Candyland with cute kids. Life is good (=

Snow and Daffodils

I love Arkansas. I really think this is the first week in a while that neither Hyland, Liv, or I are sick! Anyway, I have been hearing the rumblings going on about my lack of posts as of late so I thought it was time I got on here and gave everyone an update on my teeny little family!

Liv is doing great! She is getting so big it makes my heart hurt a little. I almost brokedown in Target the other day when I realized I don't have to go to the baby section to buy her one single thing anymore! She even uses grown up bowls and forks!

Anyway, she is really in to puzzles lately. We're not talking "baby puzzles" either. We have bought out all the little 24 piece puzzles I can find, and she tends to get them done in about 2 minutes. The next step up, as far as I could find, was a 150 piece Disney Princesses puzzle. I, of course, worked it with her, but I was completely amazed at how well she could hold her own on it. She would see a piece across the table, know it was part of Sleeping Beauty's skirt, turn it just the right way and then place it. I know I am probably partial, but I really think the kid has some seriously advanced visual-spatial skills.

Hyland is just moving right along with pharmacy school. I think he has really found his thing. I mean, it all just seems to come so naturally to him, and how an understanding of pharmicokinetics could ever come naturally to someone is beyond me! Oh yeah, and he really thinks it all interesting!

Since I have started working night shift Hyland has been absolutely wonderful with helping out around the house and with Liv while I try to adjust to my new zombie-like state. I think the fact that he is getting to spend more alone time with Liv is really great for their relationship too. In fact, she actually chose him over me to cuddle up with while watching tv the other night. At least she did until he made a big deal out of it and annoyed her. Then she was right back in my lap (=

I think pretty much everyone knows that I am now working as a real licensed RN at Arkansas Children's Hospital now. I work on a general medicine floor, which means I get to see a little bit of everything. Our unit is mostly focused on babies to age 3, but sometimes we get kids a little bit older. Other than the adjustment to working nights I am so in love with my new job. It can be really stressful, tiring, and sad, but for the most part it is just completely rewarding, interesting, and fun. I absolutely love working with the kids! I can't imagine that I will ever work a shift where I won't learn something new. I also really like the role that I have in helping to educate the parents. The one major down side is that I feel like I am constantly fighting getting sick. The other nurses on the unit say it takes about 1 year to build up your immunity. I really can not wait for flu/rsv season to be over!

Anyway, there is my little update. Liv and Hyland are geniuses and I love my job!

Funny Valentine

Here is a play by play of a very funny conversation we just had with Liv...

Liv: Quincy is my boyfriend now.
Mom:  Really?  Why is that?
Liv: Well, I was sitting in the music room and Quincy was in there with all the boys and I told him I was his girlfriend now.
Mom: Wow! So what did Quincy say?
Liv: He told the boys that Livi was his girlfriend now, and then he asked me for how long.
Mom:  What did you say?
Liv: I told him 20 hours.
Mom: Why do you want Quincy to be your boyfriend?
Liv: Cause he can read a book all by himself. He's 4!
Daddy-Hy: So do you love Quincy?
Liv: Well...I love him, but I don't want to marry him.
Mom: That's good. You probably don't need to think about marrying anyone for a long time!
Liv: Oh mom, don't worry. You will have a boyfriend one day too.
Mom:  Thanks Liv.(=

Just thought this was very funny.

My Newest Obsessions!

So I have recently acquired two new obsessions. The first is Guitar Hero. Over the holiday's my brother Mike and his wife Monica introduced me to the mind numbing joy of playing Guitar Hero on Xbox 360. I haven't actually played it since we left Mom's house, but if I had a million dollars I would totally buy an Xbox just to play that stinking game!

My second obsession is saving lots of money on my groceries by clipping coupons from the newspaper and playing the Grocery Game. The Grocery Game is this really cool website www.grocerygame.com where they keep track of all manufacturers coupons along with the sales at your favorite grocery store, and they put them together to get you some seriously major savings. How major of savings you ask? Well, today I went to Kroger and saved $71! My bill that would have normally been $185 ended up being $114. I have only been playing the game for a couple weeks so I am not even saving the full amount I could if I had all the coupons from the last 12 weeks.

The website is really cool. Every Sunday morning they post a new list for that week. It is divided into 3 categories...things you can get for free (yes, I said free-I got Liv two toothbrushes, some excedrin, and a South Beach Chicken Cesar lunch wrap for free today!) , things you can get at rock bottom pricing, and things that are on sale but not as low as you could get them at a later date. The idea is to stockpile the items you use alot when they are at rock bottom pricing. My ultimate goal is to only spend about $45 per week on groceries which according to the message boards on the site is a pretty realistic goal.

Anyway, I highly recommend the Grocery Game, but I will warn you that it is a little time consuming. However, I feel that the time spent is totally worth it when you save all that money! Another thing is that it costs money to get the list...only $10 every 8 weeks, but it's totally worth it seeing as how I saved more money on my first trip to the grocery store than it will cost me to receive the list for a whole year!

Okay, now I sort of feel like a commercial, and Hyland is totally making fun of my enthusiasm, but I just really wanted to share this with my friends and family. If any of you decide to sign up for the Grocery Game list please be sure to use my e-mail as your referral so I can get a few extra weeks for free! jaime.gigliello@gmail.com

Obstacles Are What You See When You Take Your Eyes Off Your Goal

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/R2YBr6pm06I/AAAAAAAAADE/QphYzSCdsN4/s320/graduation.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144801478307140514" />
I did it! I have officially obtained my nursing degree! It feels like I have been working toward this moment for so long that it is still rather surreal that I am finally done. When Hyland and I first started dating we both talked a lot about how we weren't really happy with what we were currently doing professionally. We both had very clear thoughts about what kinds of careers we would really love to pursue if only... For so long I think we had both moved along separately knowing what we would really like to do, but somehow thinking there were just too many obstacles in our way. Going back to school seemed like a non-option to the single mom me who was barely scraping by with two jobs. I think in some ways Hyland felt like he had little chance of actually getting accepted into pharmacy school so he just didn't put forward the effort required to take the entrance exam and apply. I still don't remember who convinced who but somewhere along the way we started making plans...crazy plans! We would both go back to school! In fact why not go back to school together as soon as possible! We can do this thing together and then we will be stronger and happier for it. This was our mentality and looking back I am still not sure how we convinced ourselves to look past all the tremendous obstacles that stood in our way and take the leap, but we did. And so it started. We got engaged, 3 months later I received my acceptance letter, 2 months later we were married, 1 month after that Hyland received his acceptance letter, and 2 months later we were both full time students living on loans and love. I won't say it was easy, but we have always had a home, food, and plenty of joy in our lives.

Looking back I am still not sure how we got through that first year. There was the ever present stress associated with finances, but that was nothing in comparison with the all consuming guilt I would experience when I would have to put Liv in front of the TV for a 3 hour time span after already spending the whole day at school because mommy needs to study just a little bit longer. I don't have the words to express to you the feeling that came over me when I lied down with my sweet little girl on graduation night and she wrapped her little arms around my neck and told me she was proud of me. All I could say was that I was proud of her too. For being such a wonderful child and rolling with what was at times a very chaotic and stressful year and a half. I also realized that Hyland and I were right at the very start of this thing when we said we would be a stronger and happier family for doing this.

And I really can't officially end this post with out thanking both mine and Hyland's families. It's so much fun to walk trough all those trees in search of the "perfect" one. Then when you find that tree you cut it down with a saw they provide, and walk back to catch the hay ride. The hay ride takes you all over the farm and you pick up your tree along the way. Then they shake out out the needles for you, wrap it up, and even tie it to the top of your car. Once all that is taken care of you can go partake of the complimentary hot chocolate and fresh roasted peanuts. It's so much fun and so much less expensive than those trees you get out of those lots off the side of the road. We always have a great time, and I can feel good about laying down some of those happy childhood memories for Liv.

Thankful

I am thankful for my beautiful, loving, healthy, happy little family. Lots of scary people (not just the carnies, either), lots of monies spent, and a pretty much guaranteed tummy ache. However, Liv has just now reached the 36'' neccesary to ride the rides, and I really felt like I shouldn't deprive her of something she would love so much. Soooo, I sucked it up and went. Surprisingly it was a great day! We brought Liv's step brother Sam, and he was the perfect big brother. The two of them together are so cute! He held her hand and helped her to navigate the rush to get in the rides. He even rode the "scary" rollercoaster for her. Liv loved every minute of it too. I swear the girl has no fear. Anyway, it was a lovely day (=

Pumpkin Patch

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/RxkOYeTw9YI/AAAAAAAAABE/mGU1nouZMrc/s320/pumpkinpatch1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123141864726263170" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/RxkOY-Tw9ZI/AAAAAAAAABM/7qCifVWYhGQ/s320/pumpkinpatch2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123141873316197778" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/RxkOZeTw9aI/AAAAAAAAABU/DIwwCROAoa8/s320/pumpkinpatch3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123141881906132386" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/RxkOZuTw9bI/AAAAAAAAABc/AUkEQz2GhHE/s320/blueeyes.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123141886201099698" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/RxkOaOTw9cI/AAAAAAAAABk/gaGI5EtLkRc/s320/pumpkincarving.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123141894791034306" />
Last week Liv had her first ever field trip. It was to the pumpkin patch, and I was able to help chaperon. All the kids had a great time and it was awesome to see Liv interact with her classmates. Liv goes to Children's House Montessori, and I highly recommend this school. She is in a class with 3 to 5 year olds. This is a great situation for Liv. She is "just so shy" as one of her little friends put it. Having the older kids in the class to hold her hand and involve her is just wonderful.

While at the patch we got a couple of our own pumpkins and brought them home to carve. I was really proud of mine until I realized that noone can tell what it is I carved. Very disappointing. I love to cook. I am not gourmet or anything (my philosophy is the less the ingredients, less the time, less the calories, the better the recipe), but I do like trying new recipes and tweaking them until they are just right for my family. Anyway, one of my favorite slow cooker recipes is Curry Chicken. It's easy, tastes great, is generally nutritious, and makes your house smell wonderful all day long.

Slow Cooker Chicken Curry

*2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs (I have used regular chicken thighs and removed the skins myself before, it worked out fine. The meat just fell off the bones.)
*16 oz jar of thick and chunky salsa
*1 medium onion, chopped
*2 tbsp curry powder
*1 cup fat free sour cream

-Put chicken, salsa, and onion in crock pot. Stir.
-Put the curry in a microwave safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds (heat releases the oils in the curry). Then stir curry in with chicken, salsa, and onion.
-Cook on low for 8-10 hours (or on high for 5 hours).
-Remove chicken to serving dish; cover to keep warm. Add sour cream to crock pot, stir until well blended. Serve over chicken.

**I like to serve this dish over rice. I put a little rice in a bowl, add the chicken, then cover with the sour cream sauce.

ps...this dish is surprisingly family friendly. Liv loves it! I just put a little more rice and less sauce in her bowl.

My Little Miss Doolittle

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/Rv2Tq0BMCWI/AAAAAAAAAAs/lauaIbn9UHs/s320/apes.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115407115490167138" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/Rv2TrEBMCXI/AAAAAAAAAA0/FoZdx360ERI/s320/livnmom2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115407119785134450" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/Rv2TrUBMCYI/AAAAAAAAAA8/Q7cCVKrBAzI/s320/livnfish.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115407124080101762" />
Hyland and I purchased a zoo membership this year and it was probably the best spent $50 all year. Liv and I frequent the zoo quite often. It's a great place for a picnic lunch, weekend outing, or just a quick one hour treat for Liv right after school. I myself love watching the gorillas. There is a new baby and it is really cool to see how human like their interaction is with their child. They discipline, tease, and even put their little one down for naps! I just love it! Liv really likes the snake house (odd, I know) and the lions. So to celebrate the good week Liv had at school we headed on over to our favorite hangout.

Ever since Liv has been able to talk she has been talking for both herself and all animals she comes in contact with. She was always telling us what the animals were saying...and most of time I do believe she is right on. Some examples that immediately come to mind... Once at the zoo we were watching two snakes in their cage and one was slithering all up on the other. Liv busts out with, "that snake is telling the other to sssssssscootch over." The baby goat at the petting zoo who was making all kinds of primal screaming noises was saying, "I want my mama!" The antelopes and kudus are always staring and asking, "what are you looking at?"

Today's best interpretation came when we were feeding the coy fish. I really dislike these nasty fish. They flop all over eachother for a little pellet of food. Not sure if you have ever seen them swarm, but they make some really gross sounds when they're fighting each other for that food. Anyway, Liv goes, "that fish says 'I need some space!'" All the grown ups within ear shot laughed, and I was extra amused because that is a statement I tend to make on a regular basis. When we got home Liv interpretted for our dogs Annie and Albert, "You guys never take us to the zoo with you!" That was pretty darn funny too (=

fifty cent taco night

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ONVtkw-v4SQ/Rv19VEBMCVI/AAAAAAAAAAk/lySAfNqtZb8/s320/happyhour.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115382552572201298" />
I can't tell you the last time I got to have a true happy hour date with my friends. Well, actually it was last night, but before that it was a really long time ago. We usually save our outings for the weekends that Liv hangs out with her dad. However, last night Liv went to her dad's for an unexpected week night and we got to go have a little bit of grown-up weeknight fun. I forgot how much fun those weekday meetings can be. It's really a whole different vibe than hanging out on the weekend. It's so much more laid back and CHEAP! Happy hour specials rock!! Especially fifty cent thursday taco night at Grumpy's. So Liv has been averaging about 1.5 upper respiratory infections a month. It's very frustrating because the poor thing just keeps coughing and no medicine seems to bring her relief. She tosses and turns all night, whining, coughing, and keeping her momma awake right beside her rubbing her back and praying for some relief for her. So when we made our monthly visit to her pediatrician this time I was not leaving without something more effective. This is when the doctor comes clean with the fact that countless studies have proven that cough medicines don't work. The only cough medicines found to be effective are those that contain either hydrocodone or codeine. So I am of course nervous about giving my daughter such a heavy duty medication and ask both the doctor, pharmacist, and my ever helpful friend the internet if I should really be giving her this. The consensus: it won't harm her any more than the complete lack of sleep she is suffering with now...just make sure she wears sunscreen if we spend an extended amount of time in the sun and to keep in mind this will make her very drowsy. So with these assurances I start to look forward to a restful night in the Herring home.

About thirty minutes before Liv's regular bedtime I decide to give her the 1/2 teaspoon dose of phenegrin with codeine. About twenty minutes later my little party animal emerged. She insisted on a slumber party with Mom. This meant that I would have to put Momma make-up on her, paint her nails red (not pink because pink is for babies and she is almost a grown-up), and tell spooky stories. I have no idea where she got such a concise idea of what a slumber party is, but it was actually really fun. She was super goofy and super hyped up (nowhere near the super drowsy I had envisioned). After her nails dried and our impromptu photo shoot were over we got into bed and told out stories. I swear the girl would not go to sleep. She told me a very non-scary story about a purple unicorn named Garp, and severel silly stories about a little girl who kept monkeys in her bedroom. I think I might have fallen asleep somewhere in the middle of a story about a brown horse named Chuck.

Fast-forward to about 1 am. I wake up a little disoriented and find that Liv is no longer in my bed...mild panic. I get up to check out her bed...moderate panic. I head to the playroom, living room, dining room, bathrooms, still no Livi...serious panic! I run back to my bed and wake up Hyland, "Where's Liv! Did you put her somewhere?!" (looking back I wonder where I thought he might have put her). That's when I see this little hand poking out from under the bed. Liv is sound asleep on the floor under our bed. How and when she got there I have no clue, but I was just so glad to be able to pick her up and hold her in my arms. So I carried her to bed, and once again all was right in my little world. Did I mention this cough syrup actually works on the cough?

No, Mr Tweedy, You ROCK!

Not to brag or anything, but Hyland and I were sitting 2nd row center at the Wilco concert last night. There wasn't one single point where I felt okay with walking away to go to the bathroom (a very unfortunate situation when you basically funnel 2 beers right before heading in...my very first freeze brain from beer). My only regret was that I did not bring my camera. I have had a long standing rule to never bring my camera when drinking is involved which came about after a close call at Grumpy's...I had to send some chic in Mountain Home $40 to get my camera back, very random. However, now that I am blogging I think I might have to start bending that rule a little. Oh, one other negative of the night was my complete and utter disappointment with Wasabi. I really hope people will like my blog (=
